The Gaillac area is one of the oldest wine producing areas of France with its origins probably dating back to before the Roman occupation. In 1938, Gaillac was among the first to gain an AOC label (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée), a guarantee of character and quality. The wine region spreads over 3,500 hectares, 130 vineyards and produces 20 million bottles. Opportunities to visit award winning vineyards for free tastings [degustation] are aplenty, or one can visit numerous co-operative cellars or private ‘caves’.

Food & General Markets

Markets

Every day of the week a market will be taking place within easy travelling distance of La Vele. One of the largest and most popular for locals and visitors to the area alike is held at St Antonin-Noble-Val on a Sunday morning. In Gaillac, there is a Friday morning market and a bio-market (organic produce) late on a Tuesday afternoon. During July & August, the bio market, held in the lower square, takes on a party atmosphere with outside dining, music & dancing. At all these markets, local produce is for sale ranging from fresh vegetables, fruit, foie gras and saucisson, cheese, honey, and much more.
